So my firm just sent out an email that said IF I have a client above $X amount in assets invested with me (8 digits), that they will send me and the client to COTA for the United States Grand Prix. At a trackside suite located at the last turn. Here is my dilemma:
I have one client that has that much assets (the number is really REALLY high, by the way). Just called him.
Me: Do you want to go to a suite to watch the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas?
"Nah, I'm not really into car racing."
He is THE ONLY CLIENT that I have that has an ungodly amount of money to fit the prerequisites to get an invite for both of us, and HE DOESN'T WANT TO GO!! Somehow, I found the only multi-millionaire that does not like what can only be described as the modern King's Sport. He is a great client, fun to hang out with, fantastic when it comes to taking advice. But... BUT...
This (kinda) sucks.

So why can't he help you out? Does he have to go if you get the tix? Can you use him to get the tix and just not have him go?

I want to go! can we forge some docs? My net worth of 6 grand might not qualify ha ha

Nah, I can't ask him to do that. There will be big wigs from my company at this event (their titles start with "Chief" and "Executive"), so even if I was able to con him into saying "yes" just for me to get tickets (which I would never do), I wouldn't have a job the following Monday.

How much proof does your company need of assets? I'll be there in a cheap hotel room with my buddies, but we could probably come up with some convincing paperwork for a free suite.

Explain to him that his neighbor is going, and you can't have ol Wilcox showing you up at the annual xmas dinner party, especially since Wilcox is worth a drop in a bucket, he doesn't deserve what he has, and your client could buy and sell him 5 times over.

LOL There might be some negative ramifications to my career if we do that. But thanks for the offer!

Yeah, I figured that might be the case, but one can always hope. That's the weekend of my birthday, and I'm hoping to go Sunday at least. I can't make qualifying.

Ok, two things here...
1) Where the hell do you work and can you get me a job there?!
2) If the 2nd part of #1 is "no," I will pretend to be that client and we can go to COTA. It's a pretty full proof plan, in my humble opinion. lol

So you have to have clients who have $1b invested with you? What are these like people running pension funds, because there are only like 1,500 billionaires in the world?

Can't really disclose that, but I work in wealth management. Get a degree in finance or economics and some work experience and we'll talk,
They check. If I give them a name, the powers that be are looking up your value. They'll at least be looking up your real estate holdings to confirm you at LEAST own a small mansion.

My company flies many, many Airbus aircraft and many, many GE engines, but no invite to Austin for me either. I even have a position where something like that wouldn't be out of the question. Oh, well.
I went last year and it was a fun race. Not going this year due to the craziness around the football game being in town that weekend as well.

Ah, that makes more sense. Why not just tell the powers that be; "Hey, I don't have any clients that fit the bill and want to go, but I'd love to attend this event. If we have an extra ticket I'd really appreciate it."

Hopefully it works out! I've never been to an F1 race, let alone actually keep up with seasons and know about the cars and technology, but it definitely looks like a great time. I'm hoping I might be able to go next year. I'm jealous you're this close to going, with most or all of the costs taken care of!

So you DO live in Texas. Because not a lot of people know about that problem. Oklahoma State fans (and some out-of-town Texas fans) are going to have a big problem when they realize they won't have a place to stay that night. Or a place to park. Or a place to eat. Or...
Also, I looked for your friend at the GP of Houston, but didn't see anyone with that description. I'm sure he was there, but didn't run into him.

My parents live just west of Austin, so I wouldn't even need to get a hotel room.
The race this past weekend was the first race I've ever been to. It was fun, and the action at our corner we were sitting at was crazy. If I get to go, I'll be posting pics.

This was also my first ever race. I felt nothing but good vibes being at the race, the mood was so different. What I loved most was that I could see the racing teams working on the cars and watch the racing drivers zip through the race fans and spectators going from the pits and their racing trucks and vice-versa!
When I walked into the venue and head for my seat at turn 3, I instantly felt differently the moment I heard the pro-mazda cars qualifying. Even got video of them shooting flames! I ought to upload it to youtube and share it here.

Yeah, walking through the pit areas was neat. Seeing Franchitti and Castroneves tooling around the crowds was neat.
I was sitting with one of the Pro Mazda racer's father during the USF2000 qualifier on Saturday (racer was Michelle Bumgarner). He was giving me the skinny on all of the other racers, but then her daughter spun out and then wrecked during the race. No bueno.
Otherwise, it was fun as hell.

Make it worth his effort, is all I can say. If you can make him some money by having him go to COTA then he'll consider it, even if he isn't interested in racing. How many of those middle eastern sheiks are in it for the money and how many for the racing?

Aren't most of the people in the trackside suites not into car racing as well?
Man, if he loves travel, jetsetting, hanging out, an F1 World Championship Grand Prix is the place to be for the well heeled. Keep trying him.

Depends. When I was at a suite for last weekend's Grand Prix of Houston, I was with a lot of Mazda execs, and they were all outside watching with me. Others were too. There were some people sitting inside hobnobbing and eating, but I'd say 75% of the people were there to watch the race, not to sit around in a tent eating fajitas.
He's more or less retired now, and travels the world on whims. Like I said before, great guy, but apparently not into the hoity toity lifestyle.

I don't live in Texas, but it has been a know problem for a while. Room rates were already skyrocketing early in the year when people realized both events were the same weekend. As it was last year we rented a college kid's apartment via AirBnB to find something halfway affordable. Austin felt pretty crowded with F1 last year, I can only imagine what it will be like when you drop 100k drunk college football fans on top of that. I imagine Kimi will have a good time.
Sorry you didn't see my buddy. He is in and out of the team paddocks pretty quick with his official duties.

I really can't wait to go back next year. I feel like seeing the racing teams set up where racing fans and spectators can walk next to and being able to see teams work on the cars made the event much more fun and up-close than it would have been seeing only the race at a track course.

Poli Sci?! You can make a TON of money with that! But you'll have to wait about 8 years.
Go work at your state's capital in a Senator's/State Rep's office.
Get to know the elected officials by going to social functions and bars.
Latch onto a couple of the up-and-comers.
Continue for 8-10 years.
Become a LOBBYIST!!
Do it.

I worked in the state senate right after college. After 6 months, I got married and had a choice: work for another senator and gain experience/connections to eventually become a lobbyist, or move to Houston and look for a finance job. Not sure if I made the right choice, but I don't regret the move either.

Yeah, I still question a lot of stuff. I'm fairly young though, and can choose to change direction if need be, but I'm running a little short on time for that. Time to make big decisions I suppose. Now if I could just have the Formula 1 or WRC equivalent of the Invincible story happen...
